Zipcar and the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration Partner to Launch Car-Sharing Vehicles at Transit Stations
BALTIMORE, Md., January 22, 2018 – Zipcar, the world’s leading car-sharing network, and the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA), today announced a new partnership to add 15 Zipcars to eight rail stations along the Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink and Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Train lines, providing transit riders with on-demand access to a vehicle by the hour or by the day. The partnership increases the number of sustainable mobility options throughout Maryland while, in turn, helping to reduce personal vehicle ownership, traffic, congestion and carbon emissions.
The 15 Zipcars, including a Honda Civic and a Toyota Prius are available for reservation at the following eight stations:
- Light RailLink
- Mount Washington
- North Avenue
- Metro SubwayLink
- Mondawmin
- MARC Train
- Dorsey
- Halethorpe
- Laurel
- Odenton
- West Baltimore
With many Zipcars now near Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink and MARC Train, riders can enjoy traffic-free train travel with the convenience of having access to a car once they reach their destination. This flexible solution is great for those living car-free or car-lite, including regular transit riders who need a car for weekend trips outside of the state, commuters who take the train to and from work and need a car for a midday errand or one-car households that occasionally need access to an extra set of wheels.
“Car sharing expands mobility options for existing transit riders who can’t afford or don’t want the burden of full-time car ownership,” said MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn. “This program also will allow new, potential riders to try transit without losing the option to drive when necessary.”
After joining Zipcar, members can reserve a vehicle in seconds on Zipcar’s mobile app or online, making it a convenient solution for transit riders who need quick access to a set of wheels. Zipcar reservations include the cost of gas, maintenance, insurance and 180 miles of driving.
Zipcar’s new locations in Maryland build on the company’s success throughout the state where it has been operating since 2008. With many residents, students and local businesses already using Zipcar, the company was eager to partner with MDOT MTA to provide transit riders with convenient access to wheels where they want them. Zipcar members can reserve and drive any Zipcar parked at the Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink and MARC Train stations, as well as more than 12,000 vehicles in the company’s global fleet.
“At Zipcar, we’re big fans of public transit. We know that it’s an important part of our members’ transportation portfolio and together offer members greater connectivity and the ability to live car-free or car-lite,” said Kristina Matthews, Zipcar regional community marketing manager. “We’re pleased to team up with MDOT MTA to reduce reliance on personal vehicles, making Maryland a cleaner, greener place to live, work and play.”
